Your Obligations as Property Renters
Published on Monday, 18 January 2010
Just because you don't own the home or flat you're renting doesn't mean that you shouldn't take care of it. As a renter, you have obligations in your contract and under law that you have to keep. A tenant is anyone who pays a certain amount to the owner of a property for its use. And just as your landlord has obligations to you, you have to follow certain rules whilst renting property. Below are some of the major obligations you have to keep.
* Don't be late paying your rent. You can talk to your landlord with regards to extending your grace period. You can even ask him if you can delay your due date. But it's always good to pay the full amount of your rent on time.
* You have to take care of the space, house or flat you're renting. You shouldn't put graffiti on walls or destroy any furniture or appliance that came with the flat or house.
* You have to tell your landlord if repairs need to be done. You should also let your landlord in your rented house or flat to check on repairs and maintenance.
* Let your landlord know who and how many people are staying in the property.
* You should also inform your landlord if you have any pets.
* You have to be sure that you comply with everything written in your contract.
* You should pay all other bills that you and your landlord agreed upon. This might include phone, water and electricity bills.
To maintain a good relationship with your landlord make sure that you follow your obligations as property renters.
